Field Sites

This project will take me to four field sites:
Malampaya Sound, Palawan, Philippines
Guimaras & Iloilo Straits, Philippines
Trat Province, Thailand
Mahakam River, Kalimantan, Indonesia

Not only does this allow me to galavant around this spectacular region of the world, but comparing what I learn at these different sites will (I anticipate) offer valuable insight into Irrawaddy dolphin ecology and conservation, as well as artisanal fisheries in the area.  On a more lofty note, I hope that it can help us better understand how we can move forward with conservation in situations where human poverty appears to be an intractable obstacle.

Differences between these sites include habitat type (river, semi-enclosed inlet, marine straits, marine coastline), human activities, past efforts by conservation and development organizations, management efforts, and social, economic, cultural, and political contexts.

It is only through the generous help of research friends and collaborators that I can aspire to conduct research at these four sites in the time span of a PhD project.
